Chalong is host to the main launching pier in Phuket for diving and island-hopping adventures, yet overall it remains a low-key kind of place with a good deal of local flavour. Speaking of local flavour, there are plenty of dining spots around Chalong that will tempt your tastebuds without putting too much of a strain on your finances.
Here are a few of our favourites:
Kan Eang @ Pier
A large seaside restaurant operated by a local family right next to Chalong Pier offering both alfresco and air-conditioned dining in an attractive, open atmosphere. Seafood is its specialty, and diners may select their lobster and crab right from the live tanks. Its hefty menu also has Japanese and Western dishes. Live music in the evenings.
Bellini Italian Restaurant
Found near the Home Pro Village shopping centre, Bellini has a very genial owner and delicious pastas and pizzas. Dine in the air conditioned main area or outside in the small garden setting. And if you don’t have time to dine in, check out their freezer for take-away pizzas and homemade pasta noodles. A relaxed and enjoyable evening out.
Kan Eang 2
Sister restaurant to Kan Eang @ Pier, this waterfront Thai restaurant is a bit more casual and family-friendly, where groups can enjoy fantastic seafood in tropical surrounds, and the kids can go play on the sand. We love the whole fish, smoked over slow-burning coconut husks. Superb views across Chalong Bay.
Set under a tin and thatch roof, it’s very simple in design but the food is divine here at Bamboo Hut, also known to locals as Pi Poo’s place after the friendly owner and cook. For such a small place it offers quite a variety, from simple noodle dishes to whole fish to curries. Pad Thai is its specialty. Found right next door to Phompassorn Apartment.
This guesthouse and restaurant on Soi Bang Rae, just a few minutes away from our apartments and villas, has an excellent restaurant in an alfresco garden setting. Our favourite dishes include the Indian curry served with brown rice and the super fresh salads. Shanti often puts on themed dinner nights with Greek, Mexican or other global fare, plus Sunday roasts, all at very reasonable prices. Bohemian, chilled-out atmosphere.
Berliner Curry Wurst
Our German guests are always delighted when they discover that just a minute’s walk away from our apartments and villas is a currywurst shop! Tables are set in bamboo huts in a garden setting. The currywurst with french fries is the best-seller here but we really love the Hungarian goulash. Hearty and spicy! Take-away containers of quark (curd cheese) are also available.
Found near the Phuket Zoo, this open-air restaurant is all about barbecued meats. With generous servings of pulled pork, ribs, brisket and hamburgers, this is a place you’ll want to go to when you’re in need of a protein boost! All of it goes down more smoothly with the restaurant’s good choice of draught and craft beers.
Chalong also has some good meat-free options, with one of our favourites, Vegetarian House, found near the Chalong circle opposite the Police Station. Really tasty vegan massaman curry and the sweet and sour tofu with lemongrass is a fine fresh dish. Several choices available, all served buffet style. Busy busy at lunchtime. Cheap and yummy!
